Direct Works Success as PMO Level 2 Apprenticeship Approved

Direct Works, along with its members and partners, have been successful in producing a Property Maintenance Operative Level 2 Multi-Skilled Apprenticeship, which has now been approved by the Institute of Apprentices & Technical Education and has entered into the final implementation stage.

Following the Grenfell Tragedy, Hackitt report, and subsequent landmark Building Safety Act, which became law in April 2022, Direct Works recognised that there was a requirement to increase the level of skills and competency of front-line operatives and to have a meaningful apprentices programme and qualifications aligned to the requirements of the industry.

The new PMO Level 2 Multi-Skilled Apprenticeship will replace the existing Level 2 Apprenticeship and will span 30 months instead of the previous typical duration of just 12 months. The new apprenticeship has received crucial input from the social housing sector, something which the previous Level 2 lacked. The apprenticeship is also the first of its kind to have a two-day final assessment process to assess learner competency.

Russell Thomspson, Chair of Direct Works, said:

“On behalf of Direct Works I would like to thank all those that have supported us along the way to achieving the new PMO Level 2 Apprenticeship. This is a pivotal and necessary step towards leading the way for competency and excellence in repairs and maintenance for the social housing sector. I’d also like give a special mention to Dr Caroline Sudworth who has guided and supported our approach.”

Direct Works, alongside Mears Group, have funded the creation of the apprenticeship.
